Men Who Stare At Goats -- by Dr. Lisa Love

psychic powers can be used to heal or hurt.  Though most of the men use their powers
for good, jealousy and the egos of some "psychic warriors" manage to create problems
that almost bring down the rest of the warriors idealized views to help, especially those of
Lyn Cassady.

Are psychic powers real?  The Pentagon seems to think so, that is why for decades, as
this true story reveals, they have been spending money on psychic research.  The main
psychic power their warriors are attempting to cultivate is that of remote viewing, which is
the capacity to psychically see what is happening at remote locations that at times are
even all the way across the globe.

As funny and absurd as
The Men Who Stare At Goats seems at times, they also
manage to be accurate in their abilities proving that psychic powers do exist.  Of course,
the knowledge of psychic powers as real is nothing new to renowned psychic Echo
Bodine, author of the book
The Gift: Understand and Develop Your Psychic Abilities.
She states that there are four major categories for psychic powers.  They are:

Bodine's Four Major Categories for Psychic Powers.

  • Mental telepathy.  The ability to hear the thoughts of others.
  • Clairsentience.  Bodily sensing what is going on with others and within the
    environment around you.
  • Clairvoyance.  Seeing through what is known as the "third eye," or psychic eye, in
the middle of the forehead, allowing you to view people and events remotely, see
into other realms (where ghosts and the deceased live), and to pick up images, or
have visions that may be related to the past, present, or future.
  • Clairgustance.  Also known as a "psychic nose" it allows you to "smell" trouble, or
sense smells that indicate certain people or events may be entering your life.

As the
Men Who Stare At Goats discover, however, these psychic gifts do not always
present themselves with 100% accuracy or clarity.  As Bodine relates,
"One of the most
widespread misunderstandings about psychic gifts is how they work. People in general
assume that psychics receive information as if it is a well-written telegram; unfortunately,
it doesn't work this way.  Clairvoyants, for example, get their information in the form of
pictures, images, or visions.  Their job is to interpret the pictures accurately, and to do
this they need to ask questions.  Often, professional psychics need help from the clients
themselves to properly interpret what the pictures mean.  This has led skeptics to claim
that psychics don't do anything but fish for information and then give that information
back to the client.  What may look like fishing to the observer is simply part of the
psychic's effort to be as accurate as possible in his or her interpretation."

The fact that psychics often need help to get greater clarity about what they are sensing
is clearly seen in
The Men Who Stare At Goats.  But, what the movie reveals is how
seriously not only those who call psychics take psychic powers, but those in various
governments and militarys do.  That is why so much research is happening to help
psychics become more accurate in their ability to sort out their various psychic
impressions.  Though their inaccuracies can make for skepticism, or even comedy (as it
does in this film), it is simple a matter of refining one's skills.  Similar to a work of art or a
piece of music -- there are those who paint or play in a childish manner, and those who
are masters at what they do.  The difference is simply one of natural talent, practice, and
being open to continually learn from mistakes, correct them, and perfect what you are
doing.  The development of psychic powers is no different, and just because some
people are in the beginning stages of learning their craft, it doesn't mean they should be
ridiculed. To help you cultivate psychic powers and make them more accurate Bodine
suggests the following:

Bodine's Basics for Cultivating Psychic Powers

  • Journal Your Psychic Impressions.  Similar to a dream journal, you simply jot down
the various impressions you are receiving to record what is going on.  You can
even journal the various questions you have about your impressions and record
the intuitions you are having about the answers to these questions.
  • Practice Detachment.  One of the most important things to be able to cultivate
psychic powers well is to be able to detach from your emotions, or expectations,
about what you sense, or want to discover, with your psychic abilities.
  • Know Where the Information Is Coming From.  There is a mistaken belief that
psychic impressions all come from a higher and more spiritual source like angels,
and evolved spiritual beings or teachers.  Not true.  Impressions can come from
those who are not very evolved, from earthbound spirits, or from ghosts or other
entities who are trying to mess with your head and take you off course.  That's
why it is important to learn discernment so you can evaluate the quality of the
    impressions you are getting.
  • Ask for Accuracy.  If you want to be a good psychic you need to be willing to be an
accurate one.  Wanting to check out your impressions to see how accurate they
are, or constantly asking that your impressions become more clear and accurate
is a good thing, and a good psychic will welcome the opportunity to become more
accurate, not be offended by it.
  • Set Boundaries.  Boundaries need to be set up so that you don't become
overwhelmed by the various psychic impressions you are receiving from others.
And, boundaries need to be set so you don't psychically violate the space and
privacy of others.  Ethical behavior is important to a good psychic who is
attempting to help others, and not invade them just to prove you are a psychic.

Finally, Bodine shares how psychics need to be wary about coming from their egos.  She
says,
"Our ego likes to be the hero, so from time to time it might try to come up with
'psychic information' in order to bedazzle others."
Larry Hooper is certainly driven by
ego in
The Men Who Stare At Goats, and Lyn Cassady at one point berates himself for
having operated from that level.  What
The Men Who Stare At Goats discover is a
lesson we all need to learn then, that all gifts and powers can be used from an
egotistical or spiritual level.  Thus, the greatest psychic power we can cultivate, as this
film clearly shows, is learning to be a spiritual human being.  Then, what we do ultimately
helps ourselves, each other, and the world.
